Floor geometry and retained deposits

The outlet position does not describe the whole tank floor. Liquid and settled material can remain in low areas that normal draining does not reach, so floor geometry and outlet level are more useful than nominal capacity when considering retained residue.

Sumps, internal baffles and other features can change where deposits collect and what can be inspected. Lining condition also matters because discolouration or coating damage should not automatically be treated as removable sludge.

Previous contents and tank construction

The previous product, its concentration and any known mixing or contamination affect the assessment. Water, fuel and process chemicals can leave very different residues in tanks with the same basic shape. A supplier data sheet describes the original product but may not fully characterise residue that has changed during storage.

Any pressure, vacuum, temperature or chemical-compatibility limits must come from the manufacturer documentation for the installed tank and fittings. They cannot be inferred from a flat floor or nominal tank capacity.

Cleaning objective and access

Cleaning for refill, inspection, repair and decommissioning can require different conditions afterwards. Sampling, lining inspection or other acceptance checks may therefore sit alongside the physical removal of deposits.

Where the work can be completed without entry, worker exposure to an enclosed-space hazard can be avoided. Any proposed internal entry requires a competent confined-space assessment; an empty tank can still present serious risks.

Condition after cleaning

Tank dimensions, access, outlet arrangement, previous contents and the nature of the residue are the main technical constraints. Shutdown restrictions and limited equipment access can also affect what is achievable.

The record of the clean should identify the areas covered and any parts that could not be inspected. Physical cleaning alone does not demonstrate structural integrity or suitability for a different stored product.
